The endocrine system is one of the major regulating systems of the human body. It consists of multiple glands located throughout the body, which make hormones that affect and regulate critical body functions. These include sugar metabolism, lipid metabolism, and thyroid metabolism.

The glands that make up the endocrine system include: the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries (for women), testes (for men), adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus. They each secrete specific hormones which interact with each other and work to keep the body in a state of equilibrium. Any gland that secretes too much or too little of the hormone it produces can cause an endocrine disorder.
