So, it’s understandable that, sometimes, a person might show up at our clinic without even really knowing why they’re here.
So, today let’s take a step back and just briefly talk about endocrinology, and what it is that an endocrinologist actually does.

Simply put, an endocrinologist is a thyroid specialist focused on the entire endocrine system.
The endocrine system in your body is made up of a series of glands which produce the hormones that regulate your body’s functions. They’re scattered all over your body, from your brain to your reproductive organs, and are absolutely vital to a person’s day to day life.
The thyroid itself is a butterfly-shaped organ in your neck. It’s more susceptible to disease and disruption than many other areas of the endocrinal system, which is why most endocrinologists are, in particular, thyroid specialists.
The most common reasons a person would be referred to an endocrinologist is if they’re diagnosed with or suspected of having either hypothyroidism, which is too little thyroid activity, or hyperthyroidism, which is too much thyroid activity. Hypothyroidism leads to depression, weight gain, and potentially even organ failure. Hyperthyroidism causes hyperactivity, memory problems, insomnia, and weight loss.
It’s a “Goldilocks” situation where the function of the thyroid has to be “just right” for your body to function properly.
The other main reason a person might be recommended to an endocrinology clinic is if they have diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to product or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired. Endocrinology is the only medical specialty focused on the study of hormones and the human endocrine system that produces them.
